3FD File

What are 3FD files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a 3FD file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your 3FD files.

What is a 3FD file?

A .3FD file is a 3D Construction Kit Font file.

The 3D Construction Kit Font file with extension .3FD is a custom font resource used by the 3D Construction Kit software (also known outside the UK as Virtual Reality Studio), developed by Incentive Software, for its Freescape engine. It stores the character shapes and formatting style that the program uses for on-screen text during game or environment creation, including menus, labels, and text objects inside the 3D worlds.

This font file is written and used by 3D Construction Kit when you design a world or interface that needs text. The editor reads .3FD files to display text in its user interface or games built with it. When you compile or save your project in the 3D Construction Kit, it will reference the .3FD font so that the correct glyphs are used when someone runs the compiled game or environment.

The format begins with a fixed ASCII header string at byte offset 0: "RECOMPILEDCREATIONFONT". This signature identifies the file type as a valid 3D Construction Kit Font resource. Any file that starts with those bytes is almost certainly this format.
