What are 3DR files and how to open them

What is a 3DR file?

3DR files have multiple uses, and 3DMark2003 Results is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

3DMark2003 Results

3DMark2003 Results files record the outcomes of 3DMark03 benchmark runs by Futuremark. They store detailed performance metrics, system configuration, and test scores when you run graphics and DirectX 9 tests to assess a PC's 3D-rendering capabilities. These files are generated automatically by 3DMark03 when a benchmark completes.

A file of this type is used to view and compare benchmark results, either locally or via Futuremark's online service. Users may open them in 3DMark03 to inspect scores, or submit them to the Online ResultBrowser (ORB) to upload and compare results with others. You can also export the data for reporting or review. If 3DMark03 Pro is installed with Microsoft Excel and Internet Explorer, results can be viewed in Excel.

Technically the file is a zip archive starting with the bytes "PK" (hex 50 4B 03 04). It typically contains several component files, among them Result.xml (with the actual test scores and performance numbers), SI.xml (system information like CPU, GPU, OS), Handle.txt, Default.enc, and sometimes Handle.txt3 or similar. These internal XML and text files follow a schema used by Futuremark for organising benchmark and hardware data.

How to open 3DR files

Important: Different programs may use files with the 3DR file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your 3DR file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While 3DMark2003 Results is a popular type of 3DR-file, we know of 2 different uses of the .3DR file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

Cyclone 3DR Project

Cyclone 3DR Project (.3DR) is a native file format used by Leica's Cyclone 3DR software to store an entire 3D project in a single bundle. It includes point clouds, meshes, polylines, surfaces, geometric features, view settings, a preview screenshot, and other project objects; images used in the project are stored separately. It enables pausing work and resuming later with all data, annotations, and views preserved, and lets Windows Explorer show a preview thumbnail.

Files in this format are generated by Cyclone 3DR when saving a project. Users then use Cyclone 3DR to open, edit, analyze, or export contained data (for example point clouds to LAS/LAZ or meshed surfaces to various formats). The .3DR project file holds all the structural and spatial data for workflows such as volume measurement, surface reconstruction, inspection, ortho-image creation, and comparison of geometric deviations.

At the start of a .3DR file there is a signature at offset zero: the byte sequence C0 11 65 48 (ASCII "..eH") identifies it uniquely.
