World of Warcraft

What is World of Warcraft?

World of Warcraft (also called WoW) is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game, or MMORPG, set in Blizzard Entertainment’s best-selling Warcraft franchise. First released in 2004, World of Warcraft has amassed a staggering 12 million unique and active subscribers around the world (as of 2010), and although it has suffered a slight decrease in active subscription (10.2 million as of December 2011) it has retained nonetheless its spot as a Guinness World Record holder of being the biggest MMORPG in history by number of subscribers. Since 2004, it has three expansions – The Burning Crusade (released 2007), Wrath of The Lich King (released 2008), and Cataclysm (released 2010) – with a fourth one, Mists of Pandaria, announced in 2011 and soon to be released. World of Warcraft is the fourth game in the Warcraft franchise, closely following the events of the real-time strategy game, Warcraft III, and its expansion, Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne.

World of Warcraft has been celebrated for its engaging storyline, active community and the tools included to create and maintain such communities, like guilds, varied and branching quests, and its scripted PVE (player-versus-environment) called raids, and its fast-paced player-versus-player action. Players get a chance to choose 10 classes in several races across 2 opposing factions.
