What is Storm Codec Unicode?
Storm Codec Unicode is a codec pack released for use with any of several media players, including the Windows Media Player and the free Media Player Classic software from Gabest (with which it was originally bundled). Originally released in 2003, Storm Codec is known for its rapid updates for file format compatibility. From 2003 to 2007, the number of formats it could play back ballooned to 189. Later in the same year, that increased further to become 245. The developer, Baofeng, also issued a promise to users that support for any new codec released subsequent to that would be included in updates to the player within 3 days of the format’s release.
While the older version of the bundle included programs from other developers (media players that could use the pack, essentially), the later versions of the Storm Codec bundle included Baofeng’s own media player application. Named Storm Codec 2.x, it packed everything needed to view video files. However, it also moved away from Unicode and became exclusively available in Chinese, rendering Storm Codec Unicode—the bundle with Gabest’s media player packed into it—the last English-language version of the software.
