What is Stellarium?
Stellarium is an open-source free computer planetarium that lets you view the sky similar to how you view it through the telescope, binoculars or with your naked eye. You can use it on projectors by setting your coordinates. Its sky features a default catalogue of more than 600,000 stars, more than 210 million stars in its extra catalogues, constellations and asterisms, twelve different culture constellations, nebulae images [full Messier catalogue], planets and their satellites, realistic Milky way, sunrise and sunset and atmosphere. The multilingual, graphical interface provides time control, powerful zoom, fisheye projection enabled for planetarium domes, low-cost dome with spheric mirror projection, extensive keyboard control and telescope control. Visualization features include star twinkling, azimuthal and equatorial grids, shooting stars, eclipse simulation, skinnable landscapes with spheric panorama projection and supernovae simulation. Customizability features enable adding of new solar system objects from sources online, adding your own constellation images, deep sky objects, landscapes and scripts, plug-in system adding ocular simulation, telescope configuration, artificial satellites and more. You can get the source code for the compilation of development versions of Stellarium from Bazar. It is the revision control system distribution of Stellarium. It runs on Linux, Mac OS X 10.6 and higher, Windows NT/XP/2000/Vista 32bit and 64bit and Ubuntu. It requires 3D graphics card with OpenGL support, dark room for realistic representation, minimum 256MB RAM, 1GB for largest catalogues of stars.
