What is Norton Ghost?
Norton Ghost 15.0 [Ghost= General Hardware-Oriented System Transfer] is a disk cloning tool. Its predecessor is Norton Save & Restore 2.0 that is already discontinued. It has additional advanced functions such as the making of full disk images as replica of your hard drive content by converting the content to virtual disk format like VMWARE VMDK file or to connect an image file as read-only file system on Windows Explorer.
Backups can be created into CDR/RW, USB, DVD+-R/RW, FireWire [IEEEE 1394] devices, Jaz and Iomega Zip drives. It will restore your system when it does not restart. Improvements include ability to copy restore points to FTP location when you restore data offline, backup of data to network-attached storage [NAS] devices, remote management, triggering backups when ThreatCon reaches a certain level, LightsOut Restore to restore your system without requiring a bootable CD and integration with Google Desktop. ThreatCon is a security alert system that enables automatic backup when the risk for your computer is too high.
It performs full backup of your system as disk images. You can work on partitions or the whole hard drive. It creates incremental backups by detecting and backing up changes to files since the last backup, differential backups by automatic backup of new files detected, granular backups for folders, files and file types you specify, event-based backups that trigger backups for events such as a new program installed or increase in data storage, encrypted backups for your data security and compressed backups to save space.
