What is a ZBLORB file?

A Z-machine Package Game File (.zblorb) is a packaged interactive fiction game format that bundles a Z-machine story file together with its associated media resources - such as pictures, sounds, and metadata - into a single file. This lets authors distribute text adventures with all their assets in one neat file, so interpreters that support it can access both the story logic and its multimedia in a unified package.

These files are created by authors or tools that produce Blorb packages targeted at the Z-machine virtual machine. The game logic (the Z-code story) is stored as the executable resource, and all other media - images (PNG or JPEG), sounds (such as AIFF, MP3, Ogg) - are embedded in resource chunks inside the same file. Files ending in .zblorb are equivalent to .blorb files with Z-machine content, so interpreters capable of loading Blorb files recognize the game and play it with graphics or sound if the Z-machine version in use supports those features.

Technically, a .zblorb file follows the Blorb specification version 2.x, using an IFF structure. It begins with a "FORM" header followed by "IFRS" to identify the file as an interactive fiction resource package. Immediately after the FORM header is a resource index chunk ("RIdx") listing executable, picture, sound, and data resources, each with usage type, resource number, and byte offset. Other optional metadata chunks (such as game identifier, frontispiece, release number, descriptions) may also appear.
