What is a Z7 file?

A .Z7 file is a Z-Code V7 Adventure For Infocom Z-Machine file.

A .Z7 file is a Z-Machine story file targeting Version 7 of the Z-Machine, used for interactive fiction (text adventure) games. Story files are compiled from a source language (such as Inform or ZIL), then the compiled file is run by a Z-Machine interpreter such as Windows Frotz. Version 7 increases the maximum allowed size of story files beyond earlier versions, and adds no major new features beyond those of Version 6, but implements updated address handling.

Windows Frotz is a known interpreter that can read and execute .Z7 files. These files are not native Infocom releases - since Infocom shut down before Version 7 was widely used - but are produced by later tools such as Inform under the Z-Machine standard. The main use is to distribute interactive fiction works with larger scope than earlier versions allowed.

Technically, a .Z7 story file begins with a 64-byte header. Byte 0 of the header holds the version number (which for .Z7 files is 7). Addressing rules (static vs dynamic vs high memory), the maximum story file length (for Version 7 story files, up to 512 KB) and the meaning of packed addresses (for routine or string locations) are defined by the Z-Machine Standard Version 1.1.
