What is a Z6 file?

A .Z6 file is a Z-Code V6 Adventure For Infocom Z-Machine file.

Z-Code V6 Adventure For Infocom Z-MachineFile files are compiled story files used by Infocom's Version 6 Z-machine virtual machine. These are interactive fiction games combining text and graphics, generated by a compiler such as Inform or Infocom's ZIL toolset. Once created, a Z6 file is run through a Z-machine interpreter (such as Windows Frotz) which reads the file, displays the text and graphics, processes player commands, maintains game state, and handles rendering and input.

In Version 6, games may include graphics, sound effects, multiple fonts, and other advanced display capabilities beyond plain text. The interpreter uses information stored in the file header to determine what features it supports and how to set up the display. During gameplay the file contents are mostly read-only, while alteration applies to dynamic memory regions such as object tables, global variables, and the evaluation stack.

Technically the file begins with a 64-byte header. Byte 0 stores the version number "6". Header fields include Flags 1 and Flags 2, which indicate (among other things) whether graphics or pictures are available; the release number and serial code; addresses for dictionary, object table, global variables, static memory and routines; and in Version 6 the "packed address of initial main routine" at a specific offset.
