What are Z5 files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a Z5 file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your Z5 files.

What is a Z5 file?

A .Z5 file is a Z-Code V5 Adventure For Infocom Z-Machine file.

Z-Code V5 Adventure for Infocom Z-Machine files are interactive fiction story files created for Z-Machine version 5, a virtual machine developed by Infocom and later used by Inform and other interactive fiction tools. These files contain the compiled game logic, text, objects, parser definitions, and resources needed to run a purely text-based adventure game. Players won't usually see the source code; instead, the program reads the .z5 file to execute the game as a self-contained story.

These story files are produced by compilers targeting Z-Machine Version 5 (such as the Inform compiler via ZILF or earlier Infocom tools), when game authors build an adventure with support for Version 5 features: larger memory limits (up to 256 kilobytes), UNDO, timed input, richer formatting including color, etc. To play a .z5 file one uses an interpreter (for example Windows Frotz) that implements the Z-Machine spec for version 5; the interpreter loads the file and handles all input/output and game state. Authors do not edit .z5 directly - they write in source languages (ZIL, Inform) which compile to this format.

Files of this format can be identified by their first two bytes in the header: the first byte (offset 0) has the value 0x05, which indicates Z-Machine version 5. Another recognizable signature is that byte 2 (offset 2) is 0x00 in many established story files.
