What are Z4 files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a Z4 file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your Z4 files.

What is a Z4 file?

A .Z4 file is a Z-Code V4 Adventure For Infocom Z-Machine file.

Z-Code V4 Adventure for Infocom Z-Machine story files are interactive fiction games compiled to be run under Z-Machine Version 4. They contain all the text, game logic, puzzles, and data for Infocom-style text adventures, allowing the game to run on any interpreter compatible with Version 4.

These files are produced by a game compiler (such as Inform or Infocom's own tools) that emits a "story file" targeting Z-Machine Version 4. Once created, the file is read by an interpreter program, such as Windows Frotz, which loads the file into virtual memory and handles input, output, branching, object management, and text parsing so the player can play the adventure.

Technical identifiers in the file include that the first byte of the file is 0x04, which indicates Version 4, and there is a zero byte at offset 2. The file conforms to the Z-Machine Specification Version 1.0 (Standard 0.2), and follows the structure defined for Version 4 story files in that standard.
