What are Z2 files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a Z2 file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your Z2 files.

What is a Z2 file?

A .Z2 file is a Z-Code V2 Adventure For Infocom Z-Machine file.

A Z-Code V2 Adventure For Infocom Z-Machine file is a "story file" compiled by Infocom for their Z-Machine virtual machine, version 2. It contains a complete interactive text adventure game (such as early Zork) in binary form, encoded so a Z-Machine interpreter can run it. These games date from Infocom's early era, when version 2 offered more limited capabilities than later versions. The file serves as the executable content: not the interpreter itself, but the data (game logic, text, puzzles) the interpreter reads and executes during play.

Such .Z2 files are created during the development process of Infocom's text adventures using the Zork Implementation Language (ZIL), which is compiled into Z-Machine story files. Once compiled with version 2, the resulting .Z2 file is distributed and later loaded by a Z-Machine interpreter (for example Windows Frotz) to allow users to play the game on a variety of platforms. Because version 2 was an early version, only a few Infocom games were ever released in this format; most are found in version 3 or higher.

Inside the .Z2 file, the very first byte is the version number (which will be 2 for this type), which signals to the interpreter how to parse the rest of the file according to the rules for version 2. The file also contains a header with metadata such as release number and a serial code (often six ASCII characters representing a date or code) which aids in identifying specific game releases.
