What is an XPR file?

XPR files have multiple uses, and Creature House Expression3 Drawing is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

Creature House Expression3 Drawing

Creature House Expression3 Drawing files (.XPR) are native documents used by Creature House Expression version 3.x, a graphics program later acquired by Microsoft. Expression3 is a vector illustration application that also supports vector - vector and vector - raster hybrid brush strokes (called skeletal strokes), allowing artists to draw with smooth, editable curves that behave like painted strokes while preserving resolution independence. The .XPR file stores all of an Expression3 drawing's vector paths, brush styles, layers, text objects, fills and effects exactly as created.

Microsoft Expression Design, a successor to Creature House Expression, can open Expression3 .XPR files and import their full contents. Expression Design inherited many of Expression3's features, such as vector editing tools, styles, layers and export options; it preserves vector and skeletal stroke definitions when loading these drawings, though it lacks some of the more advanced raster editing tools that Expression3 included.

.xpr files produced by Creature House Expression3 begin with a fixed byte‐signature: at offset 0 you'll find the ASCII sequence ".LCFV:3…$" (bytes 0x3C4C4346563A333E0AFF2401) and at offset 15 the sequence ".:xM" (bytes 0x003A784D). These signatures help programs distinguish this specific XPR format from other files using the .xpr extension.
