What are XPJ files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening an XPJ file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your XPJ files.

What is an XPJ file?

An .XPJ file is a RoboHelp XML Project file.

A RoboHelp XML Project file is the main container for an Adobe RoboHelp help-authoring project. It records the settings, content references, navigation structure, and configuration details of a help system or knowledge base before it is published. Projects in RoboHelp are collections of topics, images, templates, layout and style components, tables of contents, indexes, skins, and other assets; the .xpj file is how RoboHelp ties all these components together.

Adobe RoboHelp writes .xpj files when you create a new project or upgrade older projects (from .mpj format) into its XML-based system. Editing the project within RoboHelp (adding topics, configuring navigation, setting properties like title or language) updates the .xpj file automatically. When you republish or generate help output (HTML5, PDF, responsive help online, etc.), RoboHelp uses the .xpj file to assemble and build the project.

Internally the .xpj file begins with an XML header such as <?xml version="1.0" encoding="…"> and contains element names and attributes identifying collections of external files, topics, build tags, skins, framesets, layouts, colors, windows, templates, etc. It includes keywords like TEMPLATECOLLECTIONFILENAME, FONTSETCOLLECTIONFILENAME, FRAMESETCOLLECTIONFILENAME and many others that correspond to auxiliary project components.
