What is an XMV file?

An .XMV file is an Xbox Video file.

The Xbox Video format (.xmv) is a proprietary audio/video container developed by Microsoft for use on the original Xbox console. It is employed to store full-motion video (FMV) cutscenes, intros, trailers and other game video content in a form ready for hardware playback during gameplay. Game developers convert standard video sources (often WMV files) into the XMV format so the console can play them efficiently.

Files in this format wrap WMV2-encoded video (typically 640×480 at 29.97 fps) together with audio encoded using Microsoft ADPCM, sometimes also CBR 128 kbps audio. The Xbox console reads the video stream directly, displaying the FMV sequences and audio during game execution; developers produce XMV files with tools such as xmvtool in the Xbox SDK from existing WMV content.

An XMV file uses little-endian byte order throughout. A distinctive marker appears at offsets 12-15: the ASCII string "xobX" (Xbox spelled backwards). Width and height of the video are stored at offsets 20-23 and 24-27 respectively. Audio channel count appears at offsets 38-39, and sample rate at offsets 40-43.
