What is an XMP file?

XMind Marker File
XMind is a mind-mapping software used to write down and organize ideas. It uses XMP files for "markers", which are symbols that can be associated with tasks stored in an idea or brainstorm project. A marker is basically an icon file, and can thus resemble anything from smileys to arrows.

Adobe Extensible Metadata Platform
XMP is an acronym for Extensible Metadata Platform. Files that contain the .xmp file extension normally store metadata information that describes an associated image, database, or web document file.
The XMP file format was created by Adobe as a part of the Adobe Extensible Metadata Platform. An XMP file can contain various information about the associated file, such as the file description, author, copyright information, title, and keywords. These details are saved in the standard metadata format, making it searchable by XMP-compatible applications.
The XMP files are used to organize large volumes of files into a searchable database.
