What are WER files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a WER file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your WER files.

What is a WER file?

WER files have multiple uses, and Windows Error Report is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

Windows Error Report

Files containing the .wer file extension are most commonly associated with the Windows Error Reporting utility software included with the Windows operating system. When the Windows Error Reporting application generates an error report, it saves the report with the .wer file extension.

The WER files created by the system contain information about software crashes and allow users to report the errors to Microsoft Corporation. This helps Microsoft debug issues that may be occurring with their software products.

How to open WER files

Important: Different programs may use files with the WER file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your WER file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While we have not verified the apps ourselves yet, our users have suggested two different WER openers which you will find listed below.
