Files that contain the .webloc file extension are usually Mac OS X website shortcuts. Apple's Safari Web browser normally creates these files.

A WEBLOC file is created on a user's computer when a user drags the website icon located next to the address field in the Safari browser and pulls it onto their computer desktop. The WEBLOC file will then store the address of the specific website, and the user can access the site at any time by clicking on the desktop icon.

WEBLOC files are similar to the URL files used by the Windows operating system to save URL shortcuts.
