What are WBD files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a WBD file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your WBD files.

What is a WBD file?

WBD files have multiple uses, and Softlink Whiteboard Data is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

Softlink Whiteboard Data

Softlink Whiteboard Data (.WBD) is a file format used by the eBeam interactive whiteboard software from Luidia Inc. and associated products. These files store whiteboard meeting sessions, including pen strokes, annotations, background images, text tools, layout settings, and presentation notes. Users work in real-time on a digital whiteboard during meetings or classroom sessions, then save their session in .WBD so it can be reopened, edited, reviewed, or exported later.

The .WBD file is written by eBeam Whiteboard (also called eBeam Capture) as the native capture format for whiteboard sessions. It is read by the same software when you choose Open; the software displays all created pages, background images, annotations, and text as they were in the session. Users can also import background images, merge other whiteboard files into an existing session, and export content (for example into PDF or image formats) after saving or reopening with .WBD.

The file is XML-based and contains structured text with tags and attributes. At the beginning it begins with an XML header such as <?xml version="1.0" encoding="…">. It includes keywords like Whiteboard, TOOLSTROKE WIDTH, BACKGROUND ID, MEDIA SIZE, and IMAGE NAME, among others. The file may also reference .JPG images and textual notes, fonts, colors, shapes like RECT, JOIN behavior, ALPHA transparency, and other rendering parameters.
