What are VDM files and how to open them

What is a VDM file?

VDM files have multiple uses, and Vienna Development Method Source Code is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

Vienna Development Method Source Code

Files that contain the .vdm file extension contain program source code that is based on the Vienna Development Method. The Vienna Development Method was created for the development of computer-based systems at IBM's Vienna Laboratory.

The VDM source code files are written in the VDM-SL language, also known as VDM++.

How to open VDM files

Important: Different programs may use files with the VDM file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your VDM file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While Vienna Development Method Source Code is a popular type of VDM-file, we know of 4 different uses of the .VDM file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

SolidCut CAD/CAM File

The Peps SolidCut CAD/CAM software program also uses the .vdm file suffix. These VDM files contain the graphics and/or machining files that have been created with the SolidCut Software program.

vEdit Macro File

The vEdit software application has also been known to use the .vdm file suffix. These VDM files contain macro files that are used by the application. vEdit is a text editor and text format converter, and macros are used to automate repetitive editing tasks.

VDM opener for Windows

We have identified one VDM opener that is compatible with this specific type of VDM file.

Microsoft Windows Defender Virus Definition Module

We know that one VDM format is Microsoft Windows Defender Virus Definition Module. We have not yet analyzed in detail what these files contain and what they are used for. We're working on it.
