What are TYPE files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a TYPE file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your TYPE files.

What is a TYPE file?

A .TYPE file is an Intellifont Font file.

Intellifont font files can be traced back to the 1980s. Tom Hawkins, Compugraphic's chief software engineer, devised them as a scalable font technology. His patent, granted in 1987, quickly made waves through the printing industry. By 1990 HP had adopted Intellifont for their PCL protocol and LaserJet printers.

These ".TYPE" files contain vital information for defining a font's shape, character structure and spacing; qualities that remain regardless of scaling. As a result fonts can be worked in without loss of quality or style - no matter their size - which makes it popular even 30 years on from its conception.
