What are THP files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a THP file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your THP files.

What is a THP file?

A .THP file is a GameCube THP Video file.

GameCube THP Video files are full-motion video files used on the Nintendo GameCube and later on the Wii for cutscenes, in-game trailers and other prerendered video content. They are produced by Nintendo tools such as THPConv, especially during game development or disc mastering. These files store both video (typically unescaped Motion JPEG-style frames) and, optionally, audio tracks encoded in a custom ADPCM format. To view such a file, a THP-aware video player or emulator is generally required.

THP files begin with a header that includes the ASCII identifier "THP\0", a version number, maximum frame size, audio sample limits, frame rate and total frame count. After header data comes the components section (defining video and possibly audio presence), followed by per-frame data blocks. Each frame contains a frame header, then image data, and if present, matching audio blocks. The audio uses ADPCM with prediction tables and multiple channels.

Bytes 0x54 0x48 0x50 0x00 (ASCII "THP" followed by zero) are the file's magic signature at offset zero.
