What are TCR files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a TCR file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your TCR files.

What is a TCR file?

A .TCR file is a Psion TCR EBook file.

The Psion TCR eBook format is a legacy ebook format created in the early 1990s for the Psion Series 3 palmtop computers. It was produced using a tool called TCReader (a compressor) and read by the Psion's built-in reader program (often called "EBook" or "Reader3"). TCR files store the text of a book in a compressed form so that long documents can fit into the limited RAM and storage of those devices. The format supports minimal text formatting (e.g. basic character set, newlines) but no styles, images, or layout beyond plain text flow.

Once a TCR file is produced (usually from a plain-text source), it is read by compatible ebook reader software on the Psion or by modern conversion/viewing tools. Common use now is for reading or converting old ebook collections originally written for Psion devices. Modern programs like Cool Reader may also support it.

Files in the TCR format start with the ASCII signature "!!8-Bit!!" at the very beginning (offset 0), which helps identify the format.
