What are STUDIO3 files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a STUDIO3 file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your STUDIO3 files.

What is a STUDIO3 file?

A .STUDIO3 file is a Silhouette Studio Data file.

Silhouette Studio Data (.studio3) is the native file format used by Silhouette Studio version 3 and later by Silhouette America. It stores design projects meant for use with Silhouette cutting machines, combining graphical artwork with instructions needed for cutting. A .studio3 file is what you get when you save a design in Silhouette Studio: it preserves shapes, lines, text, images, fills and color/gradient patterns, plus the page layout and any effects or style settings you added.

This file format also includes configuration and metadata that tell the Silhouette machine exactly how to cut the design: cut settings (like force and speed), registration marks, grid settings, possibly emboss or stipple elements, and any special cutting behavior. It serves both as a design file you edit and as the final file you send to the cutter.

Files with extension .studio3 begin with a binary‐level signature: the first bytes are 0x73696C686F7565747465 (which in ASCII reads "silhouette") at offset 0, followed by byte 0x3B at offset 12. This signature helps software recognize that the file is indeed a Silhouette Studio Data file.
