What are SR2 files and how to open them

What is a SR2 file?

SR2 files have multiple uses, and Camera RAW Image File (Sony SR2) is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

Camera RAW Image File (Sony SR2)

Camera RAW Image File (Sony SR2) is an image format produced by certain Sony digital cameras in RAW mode. Such files store the direct output from the camera's sensor without in-camera processing like compression, color adjustment, or sharpening. Using this format preserves maximum image detail and flexibility for editing exposure, white balance, shadows, highlights, and other parameters later in software.

These files are written by Sony cameras when set to RAW or RAW+JPEG capture mode, for example models in the Cyber-shot R-series. After shooting, SR2 files are typically developed on a computer using special software (often supplied by Sony or third-party RAW development tools) to produce images viewable by most other programs. Until development, SR2 images generally cannot be displayed or edited reliably by regular image viewers.

SR2 format is based on the TIFF container structure, using Exif metadata and Sony-specific maker notes to record camera settings and sensor data. It supports uncompressed or lossless compression RAW image data, with bit depths up to 16 bits per channel.

Files in this format begin with a standard TIFF header near the start (offset zero) containing an identifier "SONY" in the maker note and a tag indicating the RAW subtype.
