Important: Different programs may use files with the SPJ file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your SPJ file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While BeepFX Sound Effects Project is a popular type of SPJ-file, we know of 5 different uses of the .SPJ file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

PhotoStage Slideshow Project

PhotoStage Slideshow Project files (extension .SPJ) are project files created by NCH Software's PhotoStage Slideshow Producer. They store all the user's slideshow-building information - such as the sequence of images, video clips, transitions, effects, durations, audio tracks, narration, slide layout, and references to media files - but not the rendered video itself. These files are used during editing so you can reopen, adjust, and continue work on your slideshow. To share your project as a video playable outside PhotoStage, you must export or "Save Slideshow" into formats like MP4, AVI, MOV, or burn it to DVD.

PhotoStage writes these .SPJ files when you save your work-in-progress using File → Save Project (or Save Project As). They function like a blueprint pointing to media files located elsewhere on your computer. If those media files are moved or deleted, the project may lose those elements. To move or back up a complete project, PhotoStage provides a "Back Up Project Files to Folder" option which copies all referenced media into one location so the project remains intact.

Technically a .SPJ file begins with the ASCII text "version=" at byte 0 and ".hindex=" at byte 9, and within the file contains internal keywords such as VERSION, HINDEX, SEQUENCECLIPS, TRANSITIONS, EFFECTS, SOUNDCLIPS, SAMPLERATE, CHANNELS, DURATION, AUDIO, NAME, TYPE, RELATIVEPATH among others. These terms help define the structure of the slideshow's timeline, media references, effects, and transitions.
