SKN File
What are SKN files and how to open them
Are you having problems opening a SKN file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your SKN files.
What is a SKN file?
SKN files have multiple uses, and Adobe RoboHelp Skin is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.
Adobe RoboHelp Skin
An Adobe RoboHelp Skin file with extension .SKN is a definition file used to customize the appearance and functionality of a help system (WebHelp, FlashHelp or AIR Help output) created with Adobe RoboHelp. It controls how interface elements like navigation panels, toolbars, fonts, buttons, logos, background graphics, and frames are styled before publishing help content.
RoboHelp generates or includes .SKN files when you create or modify custom skins via the project's Skin folder. To customize an existing skin, edit its .SKN file - often together with associated images and CSS - to set layout properties like frame sizes, toolbar modes, built-in navigation items, fonts, colours, and logo modes. When publishing, the selected skin defines visual and structural elements of the help output.
SKN files are XML-based: they begin with an XML declaration such as <?xml version="1.0"?>. Internal tags include fields like SKINNAME, FONT-FAMILY, FONT-SIZE, FONT-COLOR, FRAMESET, NAVIGATION PANE, TOOLBARITEM, LOGO MODE, BACKGROUND, HOVER among others. Some keywords indicate built-in components such as BUILT-IN-SEARCH, BUILT-IN-INDEX, BUILT-IN-PREVIOUS, BUILT-IN-NEXT and settings for panes, form modes, alignment etc.

All known file formats using extension .SKN
While Adobe RoboHelp Skin is a popular type of SKN-file, we know of 10 different uses of the .SKN file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.
Symbian OS Skin
The Symbian OS operating system is most commonly used by various Nokia cellular phones and mobile devices. The SKN files that the Symbian OS uses allow "skinning" or "theming" of the Symbian OS user interface. This includes changing the look of the interface's buttons, icons, labels and background image.
Many applications use SKN files for interface customization, but they are usually not compatible. You need to use your SKN file with the application or Operating System it is designed for.
While we have not verified the apps ourselves yet, our users have suggested ten different SKN openers which you will find listed below.
BioForge Skin
We know that one SKN format is BioForge Skin. We have not yet analyzed in detail what these files contain and what they are used for. We're working on it.
Blaze Media Pro Skin
Blaze Media Pro Skin files are used by the Blaze Media Pro application from Mystik Media to alter the program's visual appearance. These files store interface skins that change how Blaze Media Pro looks: things like colors, buttons, menus, and possibly background images, so that users can customize the software's appearance.
You get a .SKN (or .BMPSKIN) when you select or install a skin theme inside Blaze Media Pro. The program reads these files when it launches or when you switch skins, applying the layout and styling stored in the .SKN file. Users don't usually edit these files by hand; instead, they come bundled with Blaze Media Pro or downloaded from third-party providers and are applied through the settings or preferences in the software.
Internally, the .SKN file format uses binary structures and contains identifiable text labels such as Root Entry, Skin, Menu, Play, Stop, Back, Volume, Max, etc., which correspond to UI elements. The header begins with a Compound File signature (bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1 …) and includes offset-based signatures and keyword strings that tools or skin editors might use to parse elements of the skin.

TiEmu Skin
TiEmu Skin (v2.00) files are custom skin definition files used by the TiEmu calculator emulator and compatible tools like SkinEdit and TilEm2. They define how the calculator's physical appearance is drawn in the emulator window by specifying graphics for the calculator frame (keyboard, case), position and size of buttons, the LCD screen area, and the embedded image used for the skin artwork.
These files are produced by TiEmu's skin tools - typically SkinEdit or TiEmu itself when saving a new skin. The emulator reads these files at startup or when a user chooses a custom skin file via the "skin_file" setting. Within the emulator, this skin defines layout regions for each button (up to 80 keys), and regions for LCD display, plus color settings for LCD white and black tones. TilEm2 (a sibling emulator) also supports using TeEmu v2.00 skins for its display.
Files begin with a header that includes the ASCII string "TiEmu v2.00" at the very start, followed by fields for endianness, a JPEG image offset (where the artwork part begins), and numeric values for calculator type, color type, LCD white and black values, and rectangular coordinates for the LCD screen and each key. After the layout data, there is embedded image data, usually a JPEG, that provides the visual skin artwork.

Virtual TI V2.x Emulator Skin
Virtual TI V2.x Emulator Skin (.SKN) files are skins used by the Virtual TI emulator to change how a TI calculator model appears on screen. They package artwork, layout data, and button-key mappings so that the emulator can display a graphical representation of the calculator - its case, faceplate, and keys - around or over its screen. Users apply them when they want a different visual style, e.g. to match a specific TI model or to better suit screen resolution.
These skin files are created by Virtual TI itself. They are bundled with the emulator or with user-created custom skin packs meant for it. When Virtual TI loads such a file, it reads the skin image, positions its screen and buttons, then overlays those graphics as part of its rendering of the simulated calculator.
Internally, SKN files begin with the ASCII signature "VTIv2.x" to indicate the format version. The header includes a name or descriptor ("DefaultTI-…" or similar), then embedded image data - often in JPEG, identifiable by "JFIF" - along with keywords such as DEFAULT and "VTIV2." These allow programs like SkinEdit and the emulator to detect and parse the file correctly.
Known skin file versions include VTI v2.1 and VTI v2.5. Types differ slightly: the skin image may start at different byte offsets depending on version. The file's internal name field, followed by JPEG image data, makes it possible to extract or replace the skin image with external tools.
