What is a SH3D file?

A .SH3D file is a Sweet Home 3D design file.

Sweet Home 3D design files (extension .sh3d) store entire home interior design projects created with Sweet Home 3D, an application for drawing house plans, arranging furniture, and viewing homes in 2D and 3D. These files are used when you design or remodel a space; everything about your layout - walls, rooms, furniture placements, cameras, textures - goes into the .sh3d so you can save, reopen, edit, and share the design.

The .sh3d file is written by Sweet Home 3D (by eTeks) and is editable using the same program or its online editor. You can export parts of its content - 2D floor plans to PDF or SVG, 3D views or models to OBJ format - once opened in Sweet Home 3D. When you load a .sh3d file, the program reconstructs both the 2D blueprint and the 3D scene, applying textures, lighting, and furniture as saved in the file.

Technically, .sh3d is a ZIP archive (starts with bytes 50 4B 03 04) containing several internal files. Among them are a core descriptor called "Home" (a Java-serialized form) and since version 5.3 an XML descriptor file named Home.xml following a specific DTD. Other entries include embedded 3D furniture models (OBJ/MTL files), texture images (JPEGs), a ContentDigests file with SHA-1 hashes, plus CRC-32 checksums for entries.
