What are RWL files and how to open them

What is a RWL file?

A .RWL file is a Leica RAW Image file.

Leica RAW Image (.RWL) files hold the unprocessed sensor data from certain Leica digital cameras. These files are produced when the camera is set to record in its RAW mode rather than JPEG, preserving all the native color and exposure information. RAW images retain much more detail than compressed formats, allowing for major adjustments (like exposure, white balance, and contrast) during post-processing without degrading image quality.

These files are made by Leica Camera AG models such as the D-Lux series. After shooting, the .RWL file is typically transferred to a computer and opened with raw-capable software for development into a viewable image. This development can include demosaicing (converting Bayer sensor data into full color), applying color profiles, tone mapping, and exporting to JPEG, TIFF, or other formats suitable for printing or sharing.

Technically, the format begins with little-endian marker bytes "IIU\0" at offset 0. It contains EXIF metadata including a MakerNote starting with the ASCII "LEICA" tag plus version markers ("Ver") further into the header.
