Entertainment Software Partners RL2 Video File

Entertainment Software Partners RL2 Video File is a video file format used to store full-motion video (FMV) sequences for the PC version of Voyeur, a game developed by Entertainment Software Partners. The format packages frame-by-frame video along with audio so that interactive cinematic scenes can be played within the game.

Video in RL2 files is compressed using a simple run-length encoded (RLE) scheme at a display resolution of 320×200 pixels. Audio data, when present, is stored as raw unsigned 8-bit PCM. The format supports a background frame (BACKGROUND_FRAME) shared by a sequence, over which video frames can overlay changes. Frame-rate is derived from sound data when sound is present; otherwise a default value is used.

Every RL2 file begins with a header: the ASCII tag "FORM" at offset 0, followed by background‐frame size, then a signature field ("RLV2" or "RLV3"), and a big-endian DataSize value. Subsequent data includes a SoundSize table, followed by alternating raw audio blocks and compressed video frame blocks using the RLE‐based scheme.
