Opening RDP files

Did your computer fail to open a RDP file? We explain what RDP files are and recommend software that we know can open or convert your RDP files.

What is a RDP file?

The .rdp file extension is used for a settings and configurations file format, which was developed by Microsoft Corporation. These RDP files are also known as Microsoft Windows Remote Desktop Connection settings files. These .rdp files are used by the Remote Desktop Connection service in Microsoft Windows PCs, which allows users to remotely connect to their Windows PCs through terminal servers. These RDP files contain settings and configurations that have been saved by the user through options provided by the program interface of the Microsoft Windows Remote Desktop Connection service. These .rdp files are automatically updated when a user saves changes to the settings and configurations of the Microsoft Windows Remote Desktop Connection service. These RDP files may also store metadata details like date and time stamps for the creation and most recent modifications that have been done to these RDP files by the Microsoft Windows Remote Desktop Connection service. The Microsoft Windows Remote Desktop Connection service internally uses these .rdp files. It is advised to leave these RDP files alone, in order for the Microsoft Windows Remote Desktop Connection service to continue functioning correctly.

Try a universal file viewer

In addition to the products listed above, I would suggest that you try a universal file viewer like Free File Viewer. It can open over 200 different types of files - and very likely yours too! Download Free File Viewer.
