What is a PNACH file?

A .PNACH file is a PCSX2 Patch file.

A PCSX2 Patch file (.pnach) is a text file used by the PCSX2 emulator for the PlayStation 2. It defines modifications (patches) applied to games as they run - these can be cheats, bug fixes, widescreen enhancements, or compatibility fixes. PCSX2 itself creates and uses .pnach files to allow users to tweak memory values in a specific game without altering the game disc or ISO.

Users write or obtain .pnach files and place them in PCSX2's patches or cheats directory. Filenames must match the game's CRC hash and product code so that PCSX2 automatically loads relevant patches when a matching game runs. Within the file, metadata lines (such as gametitle=, author=, description=) describe the patch, and patch directives specify the memory address, CPU (usually EE or IOP), data type, and value to write. Newer versions support grouping patches under section headers to allow toggling individual patches in the UI.

Files are saved in plain text (INI-like) format and are editable with any text editor. Patch lines begin with "patch=" followed by parameters: status (enabled or not), CPU, address (hexadecimal), type (byte, short, word, double, extended, etc.), and the data value to write. Groups are denoted by names in square brackets, and metadata keywords include gametitle, comment or author.

Technical signature: these files begin with ASCII strings such as "gametitle=" at offset 0, and contain strings like "GAMETITLE", "COMMENT", and "PATCH" anywhere in the contents.
