These files are created by the Pax file archiver and contain archived data files that can be used for data interchange and file backups. Pax is short for Portable Archive eXchange.
Often a user who needs to save a large file or a large batch of files across multiple disks will use the PAX file archiver to compact the size of the files. The PAX file format can also make it easier to distribute large files or batches of files over the Web or via email.
