Opening PAX files

Did your computer fail to open a PAX file? We explain what PAX files are and recommend software that we know can open or convert your PAX files.

What is a PAX file?

Files that contain the .pax file extension are commonly associated with the PAX file archiver. These files contain archived data files that can be used for data interchange and file backups.

Oftentimes a user who needs to save a large file or a large batch of files across multiple disks will use the PAX file archiver to compact the size of the files. The PAX file format can also make it easier to distribute large files or batches of files over the Web or via email.

The .pax file extension is also used by the FamilySearch genealogy software application. These PAX files store the personal ancestral files that are saved by the application user.

The PickAx software is also known to use the .pax file suffix. These PAX files contain secure graphics files that are used by the PickAx application.
