PVRG-P64 Encoded Video File

PVRG-P64 Encoded Video File is a legacy video file format created in 1993 by Stanford University's Portable Video Research Group (PVRG). It stores video compressed using a variant of the H.261 codec, designed for early digital video and video-conferencing systems operating at bitrates that are integer multiples of 64 kilobits per second.

Files with this format are written by encoder tools provided by PVRG (e.g. "PVRG-p64 codec 1.1") from raw raster-scanned image sequences (often YUV format). Decoders provided by the same software (or compatible tools like FFmpeg) are used to read them, enabling playback, conversion, or archival of these old video streams. Because they follow an early standard, they do not support many features of modern codecs like advanced motion compensation or high resolutions efficiently.

The name "P64" refers to the bitrate ("p × 64 kbps") with "p" ranging from 1 to about 30. The compression is based directly on H.261 video standard defined by CCITT (ITU-T), including frame types and block encoding characteristic of that standard. Documentation from the PVRG software source includes manuals, source code (p64.c and p64.h), and sample encoded videos such as "bike.p64" and "stennis.p64".

A technical signature of PVRG-P64 files is that they are raw video bitstreams without a modern container wrapper; they do not include headers identifying codec or container (like AVI/MKV) but follow the PVRG-supplied H.261-based stream format. Sample file names often end in ".p64", and tools like the original PVRG codec expect input and output files with that extension.
