What are OSC files and how to open them

How to open OSC files

Important: Different programs may use files with the OSC file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your OSC file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While we have not verified the apps ourselves yet, our users have suggested four different OSC openers which you will find listed below.

All known file formats using extension .OSC

While FL Studio 3x Osc Settings is a popular type of OSC-file, we know of 3 different uses of the .OSC file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

OpenStreetMap Change Data

OpenStreetMap Change Data (extension .osc) is used for representing updates made to OpenStreetMap (OSM) data. It is an XML-based diff format written by editors, tools, or replication services to record additions, modifications, or deletions of map objects. When you have an existing .osm dataset and want to bring it up to date with recent edits, you apply one or more .osc files to merge those changes. This is how editors and servers share incremental OSM updates rather than distributing full snapshots.

These .osc files are produced by tools like Osmosis replication, editors exporting their edits, or generators that compare two OSM data dumps. Consumers such as map clients or local OSM databases apply the changes to existing datasets: new nodes, ways, or relations added under the "create" section, changed objects under "modify," and removed ones under "delete." Versions and changeset identifiers are included so you know which version of each object this file applies to.

Files always start with an osmChange root element, often with attributes like version, generator, timestamp. Within that are <create>, <modify>, and <delete> sections containing nodes, ways, or relations. Every object has an "id," "version," and "changeset" attribute; deletion entries need only those three. New objects often use negative "placeholder" ids until the server assigns permanent ones. The file contains XML tags like <tag k="…" v="…">. Byte signatures include ASCII < at the start, and text such as "OSMCHANGE VERSION", "GENERATOR", "TIMESTAMP", "OSMOSIS", or "TAG K" somewhere in the file.
