What are NTP files and how to open them

What is a NTP file?

NTP files have multiple uses, and Natron Project is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

Natron Project

Natron Project (.NTP) files hold the saved projects made with Natron, a node-based compositing application used for building visual effects. The file stores a node graph setup including which image or video reader nodes are used, the output format, number of views, frame rate, and various project settings. No image or video pixel data is embedded; the file defines how Natron should process external media when the project is opened.

A .ntp file is generated when you save your work in Natron or through commands such as "Save Project" or "Save Project As." Once stored, Natron reads the .ntp to recreate your node network, enabling further editing, rendering, or version tracking. Natron also expects project filenames to follow versioned naming like name_001.ntp, name_002.ntp, etc., to keep successive versions organized.

Technically the file is structured in human-readable XML. It begins with an XML declaration and contains elements corresponding to nodes, parameters, paths, and project-wide settings. A signature or fixed header string isn't widely documented; identification relies on recognizing the XML root element naming (usually "project" or equivalent) and Natron-specific tags inside.
