What is a NIST file?

A .NIST file is a NIST Speech Header Resource Audio file.

The NIST Speech Header Resource Audio File is an audio format used by the National Institute of Standards and Technology for storing recorded speech along with metadata in a consistent header. It is commonly applied in speech recognition research and evaluation, and is often referred to as the SPHERE format. It encodes waveform data together with header information for sample rate, number of samples, channels, sample byte format, and utterance identifiers.

Files in this format are usually created by speech corpus projects or tools that follow NIST standards - for example, the TIMIT or Resource Management corpora. After creation they are consumed by speech processing or recognition software, which uses the metadata in the header to know how to interpret the binary audio data. These files are not typically edited directly; tools like HTK, SoX, or custom SPHERE utilities read, convert, or extract data from them.

The format starts with an ASCII header of fixed size (usually 1024 bytes) beginning with a signature like NIST_1A on the first line and a line giving the header length (e.g. "1024"). That header contains name-value pairs such as database_id, utterance_id, sample_rate, sample_count, number of channels, sample_byte_format (which indicates endianness), sample_n_bytes, and sample_sig_bits. After the header, the waveform samples follow in binary form.
