What is a MV8 file?

A .MV8 file is an Interplay MV8 Video file.

Interplay MV8 Video File is a video file used for in-game cinematic sequences and animations in certain classic PC games by Interplay Entertainment. It stores cutscene or intro videos (for example, logo animations or story scenes), combining both video frames and synchronized audio. These files are created during game development and are played by the game engine when those animations are shown.

Files with this format are generally authored alongside Interplay's MVE (.mve) files and use the same codec and container structure. The video is stored using Interplay's custom video codec, while audio is either uncompressed PCM or a custom Differential Pulse Code Modulation (DPCM) scheme. Tools like FFmpeg and purpose-built projects for modding or preservation can decode or re-encode these files.

Technically, the file begins with an ASCII header reading "Interplay MVE File" followed by byte 0x1A and a NUL byte. After that, three 16-bit little-endian words follow (often 0x001A, 0x0100, 0x1133), then a sequence of stream chunks. Each chunk has a 16-bit length and stream-type field, followed by opcodes containing their own length, subtype/version byte, and data specific to that opcode (video, audio, palette changes, etc.).
