MRW File

What are MRW files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a MRW file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your MRW files.

What is a MRW file?

A .MRW file is a Minolta Dimage RAW Image file.

A Minolta Dimage RAW Image (.MRW) file contains unprocessed, 'raw' image data captured directly by the CCD sensor of certain Minolta Dimage or Konica-Minolta Dimage digital cameras. It records the exact sensor output - before any in-camera processing for color, sharpening, contrast or compression - so that later work such as adjusting white balance, exposure, or detail can be done with maximum flexibility and fidelity.

These files are written by Minolta Dimage or Konica Minolta cameras in their raw shooting mode; models include DiMAGE A2, A200, Dynax/Maxxum 5D/7D and similar. To view or develop the image in standard formats, specialized RAW-image software or converters read the sensor data, apply color interpretation and demosaicing, and output formats such as TIFF, JPEG or DNG for editing or sharing. MRW images are larger than JPEGs because they retain full bit-depth and minimal processing.

Technically, MRW files begin with the ASCII signature ".MRM" at byte offset 0 (hex: 00 4D 52 4D) identifying the Minolta Raw format. The file includes blocks such as MRM, PRD (which stores sensor dimensions, image size, bit depth, Bayer pattern, etc.), TTW (TIFF/EXIF metadata), WBG (white-balance gains), RIF (camera settings like sharpness or color mode), a padding block to align data, followed by the raw sensor image data stored in big-endian form, often with 12 bits per pixel arranged in a Bayer mosaic pattern.
