We know that one MON format is Monotone Tracker Chiptune. We have not yet analyzed in detail what these files contain and what they are used for. We're working on it.

WaveLab Montage

WaveLab Montage (.mon) files are the main project files used by Steinberg WaveLab's Audio Montage feature. They store the layout, settings, and structure of a montage - where you combine, edit, and arrange multiple audio clips just like tracks in a recording session. These files do not include the audio data itself: instead they link to the original audio files, so edits remain non-destructive and the source files are not altered.

When you create or open an Audio Montage in WaveLab, the .mon file is saved in a dedicated folder that holds all parts of the montage (such as referenced audio clips, preview files, etc.). You can have more than one .mon file in the same folder, allowing you to version different versions of a montage (for example, alternate edits or mixes). WaveLab reads the .mon file each time you load the montage, restoring all clip placement, track and Master Section settings, fades, crossfades, automation and effect assignments.

Internally, .mon files include metadata that identifies the format version and stores identifiers used by WaveLab. The file begins with a signature - at offset 12 you'll find the ASCII string "WaveLabAudioMontage", and at offset 56 the word "Root". Earlier bytes also include "LE" to mark endianness or file type. These help WaveLab recognize and validate the file before loading it.
