What is a MCDX file?

A .MCDX file is a Mathcad Prime Document file.

Mathcad Prime Document files with the .MCDX extension are created and used by PTC Mathcad Prime, an engineering mathematics program designed for performing, documenting, and sharing complex calculations. These files serve as worksheets where users combine mathematical expressions, functions, and live computations with rich formatting - text annotations, plots, images, tables, headers, and footers - into a single interactive document.

Mathcad Prime writes these .MCDX files when you save your work. They are edited using Mathcad Prime, which automatically recalculates expressions as variables change. Worksheets created with Mathcad versions before Prime (such as .MCD or .XMCD formats) generally cannot be opened directly in newer releases of Prime; to access them, PTC provides a conversion tool (XMCD, MCD Converter) in Mathcad Prime to turn older classic worksheets into the .MCDX format.

Technically, .MCDX is a ZIP‐based container following the Open Packaging Conventions (OOXML‐style) standard, the same kind of structure used by modern Microsoft Office documents. It begins with the usual ZIP magic bytes (50 4B 03 04 at offset 0) and includes internal files such as mathcad/worksheet.xml, mathcad/result.xml, content types and relationships XML entries, and metadata such as calculation settings, units systems, and worksheet layout options.
