What is a MBF file?

A .MBF file is a Microsoft Money Backup file.

Microsoft Money Backup file (extension .MBF) is a data backup file produced by Microsoft Money, a personal finance program whose primary purpose is to store copies of the user's financial data - such as account information, transactions, budgets, and all settings - in case the live data file is lost or corrupted.

When Microsoft Money's backup feature is used (such as "File → Backup" or "Restore Backup"), the program creates an .MBF file that captures a complete snapshot of a Money database file (which normally has extension .MNY). The .MBF file enables users to restore financial records to the exact point of backup on the same or another computer.

Technically, .MBF files begin with the ASCII signature "MSCF" (bytes 0x4D 53 43 46) at offset zero, indicating that the file is a Microsoft Cabinet (".CAB") archive. The backup file embeds the original Money database (and related data) inside this compressed Cabinet container.
