ArcGIS Layer File

ArcGIS Layer files, also known as “.lyr” files, are a powerful tool within the ArcGIS software suite by Esri. These files allow users to save and share cartographic information, symbolization, and layer properties for spatial data sets. By utilizing the “.lyr” file format, users can easily apply consistent visualization styles across multiple maps or projects, saving valuable time and effort.

Creating a “.lyr” file in ArcGIS is a straightforward process. First, add the spatial data to the map document and adjust the symbology and layer properties as desired. Then, simply right-click on the layer in the Table of Contents and select “Save As Layer File.” Assign a name and location for your file, and voila! You've created a “.lyr” file that can be easily shared with others.

Importing an existing “.lyr” file to your map document is just as simple. Right-click on the “Layers” heading in the Table of Contents and select “Add Layer from File.” Navigate to the desired “.lyr” file, select it, and click “Open” to apply the saved properties to your new project. This allows for seamless collaboration and consistency in map design and visualization across various projects or among different users.

While ArcGIS Layer File is a popular type of LYR-file, we know of 3 different uses of the .LYR file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

ImageEn Layer File

ImageEn Layer File format is a native format used by ImageEn, a library for image viewing, editing and annotations in Delphi, C++Builder, and .NET. Files with the extension .LYR save images with full support for layers - including image layers, text, shapes, and vector-based content - as well as transparency, annotations, and metadata. The format preserves the editable components of a layered image; it is ideal for work-in-progress graphics where you may want to modify or reorder layers.

The .LYR variant corresponds to ImageEn's "ImageEn native image format with layers" (formerly called ioLYR). Internally it operates the same way as ImageEn's .IEN and .IMAGEEN formats. Reading and writing .LYR is handled entirely by the ImageEn library. Layers saved in .LYR include not just flat pixels but also layer kinds (image, text, shapes, lines), visibility, ordering, transform and styling properties. Thumbnail images and metadata such as a tag or timestamp may also be included.

ImageEn Layer File versions are numbered and updated with new features. Version 10 (ImageEn 6.3.2) was the legacy format supporting only image layers. Later versions (from 7000 up through 15000 in ImageEn 15.0.0) introduce features such as text wrapping, measurement rulers, fill opacity, inner glow, text styling, scaled and ruler-based layers, soft shadows, rich text formatting, and support for new layer types.

Project Dogwaffle Layered Bitmap File

A Project Dogwaffle Layered Bitmap (.LYR) file is a native image file produced by the paint and animation software Project Dogwaffle (Howler). It is used to save an image along with its swap image and full layer structure, allowing users to resume work on multi-layer compositions including transparency, blending modes, and internal buffers.

In Dogwaffle, the main image and the swap image are two internal buffers that users often work with - for example, swapping between them or combining them in various modes. When saving in the .LYR format ('Save as layered format') the file captures both buffers plus any additional layers created, so all visible and invisible components of the project (such as transparency masks or stored images) are preserved. This format is used by Project Dogwaffle Howler to enable editing layered images over time.

Layer blending modes available in this layered format include additive, subtractive, multiply, divide, screen, around gray, and tracing paper, with the default mode being multiply. Unlimited layers are supported beyond version 2 of Dogwaffle, allowing for complex compositions.

The first four bytes of a Project Dogwaffle Layered Bitmap .LYR file are a signature: "LYR2" in ASCII at offset 0, identifying the file as this specific format.
