What are LEX files and how to open them

What is a LEX file?
LEX files have multiple uses, and Lexington Dictionary Format is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.
Lexington Dictionary Format File
Files that use the .lex file extension are typically associated with the Microsoft Office dictionary tool. LEX files are stored in the Lexington Dictionary file format. The LEX files are used to extend the default spelling dictionary used by the Microsoft Office dictionary software application.
They are also used by other dictionaries, such as the Merriam-Webster dictionary software application. The files are referenced when a user performs a spell check on a document they are writing.
How to open LEX files
Important: Different programs may use files with the LEX file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your LEX file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
