JRS File

What are JRS files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a JRS file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your JRS files.

What is a JRS file?

A .JRS file is a Microsoft Exchange Reserve Transaction Log file.

Microsoft Exchange Reserve Transaction Log files are special log files used by Microsoft Exchange Server's internal database engine. They serve as emergency placeholders when the system's transaction log drive becomes full. The engine creates these reserve log files in advance so that, if normal log file creation fails due to lack of disk space, the server can still finish vital logging and shut down or stop services cleanly. They are produced automatically by Exchange Server and are not meant for human-readable content.

These files are part of the Extensible Storage Engine (ESE) transaction logging system. They are named with a pattern like E##Res00001.jrs and E##Res00002.jrs where "##" is a database prefix. Under normal circumstances these reserve logs are inactive and hold no meaningful data. If the log disk becomes full, the engine uses them to continue logging just long enough to allow operations like shutdown or rollback to complete safely. Exchange environments, database backups, and recovery tools will treat them like other transaction log files during restore and recovery processes.

On modern systems (Windows Vista or later, along with recent Exchange Server versions), reserve transaction log files are given a filename ending in ".jrs". Prior to that, in earlier Windows and Exchange versions, similar reserve logs were named with ".log" extensions, such as Res1.log and Res2.log. Reserve log files typically occupy minimal size and are binary; they are not intended to be edited or opened manually.
