What are IMX files and how to open them

How to open IMX files

Important: Different programs may use files with the IMX file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your IMX file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While we have not verified the apps ourselves yet, our users have suggested six different IMX openers which you will find listed below.

All known file formats using extension .IMX

While Fable IMAX Video is a popular type of IMX-file, we know of 3 different uses of the .IMX file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

IMindMap Map

IMindMap Map (.imx) files are mind map documents created by iMindMap from ThinkBuzan (later Ayoa). These files store visual diagrams of ideas - with a central idea, branching nodes, text, images, sketches and notes - used for brainstorming, planning, note-taking or presentation design. They are produced when users save or export a map inside iMindMap 5 or newer (versions before 5 used .imm instead).

An .imx file acts as a container for everything needed to display the finished mind map: layout information, branch structure and styles, embedded images, notes, and often a preview thumbnail. Because the format is proprietary, iMindMap is the only application guaranteed to fully create and edit .imx files.

On a technical level, an .imx file is essentially a ZIP bundle containing several XML files and image assets. Common members inside the archive include data.xml for core content, mapmeta.xml and mapappmeta.xml for metadata and app-specific settings, and thumbnail.png for a small preview.

We know that one IMX format is Zoop Game Graphics. We have not yet analyzed in detail what these files contain and what they are used for. We're working on it.
