What are IGN files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening an IGN file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your IGN files.

What is an IGN file?

An .IGN file is a RoboHelp Ignore List file.

A RoboHelp Ignore List file is used in Adobe RoboHelp to store a project's "Always Ignore" or noise words - common words that are excluded automatically when creating indexes or search functionality. These files help control which words RoboHelp will omit during search or indexing operations. Their purpose is to improve the relevance of search results by ignoring filler terms like "a," "the," or "as."

These files are written and maintained by Adobe RoboHelp. When setting up a help project, the user can modify the Always Ignore Words list via the Project Settings under the "Always Ignore" pane; words you add there are saved in a file named after your project (for example ProjectName.ign). They are part of the project's language folder and are managed within RoboHelp's authoring interface.

An .ign file is plain text, so it can be opened and edited in any basic text editor. Each line typically contains one word to ignore. There is no special or fixed byte signature for .ign files beyond them being text encoded according to RoboHelp's language settings and saved with the .ign extension.
