HPD File
What are HPD files and how to open them
Are you having problems opening a HPD file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your HPD files.
What is a HPD file?
HPD files have multiple uses, and HotDocs PDF Document is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.
HotDocs PDF Document File
A HotDocs PDF Document File (.HPD) is a file created by HotDocs when a user assembles a graphical PDF‐based form template and fills it in with answers so that fields remain editable. It stores the filled form layout, user‐entered data, and interactive form field definitions. These files let users return later to edit answers using HotDocs Filler without needing the original questionnaire. The format is used primarily for documents built from form templates, rather than normal text templates. HotDocs generates .HPD files when a form template (often based on a fillable PDF) is assembled and saved so that the answers are not yet locked into static text but can still be revised.
When saving a completed document from a form template, HotDocs offers options including .HPD (editable PDF form document), static PDF (which shows current answers but does not allow changes to fields), or fillable PDF (if the fields are retained so tools like Adobe Acrobat can also edit them). Users can edit .HPD files later in HotDocs Filler. Print operations of .HPD files can use HotDocs' own printing tools or external tools like Adobe Acrobat, depending on whether fields are still dynamic.
As a technical identifier, .HPD files are PDF‐based form documents. In HotDocs' SDK they correspond to the OutputFormat value "HPD" meaning a PDF‐based HotDocs form document; this format supports HotDocs fields and retaining the ability to modify answers.
