What is a HMT file?

Files that contain the .hmt file extension are most commonly associated with HighMAT media files. HighMAT stands for High Performance Media Access Technology. The HMT file format was developed through a joint effort between Panasonic and Microsoft to store digital media files.

HMT files are used to play digital media that has been saved on CDs that are used on home entertainment equipment, such as stereo systems and DVD players. The HMT files can contain images, video and audio media.

The HMT file format has now been discontinued and support for the file format is no longer available from Microsoft.
