What are HFD files and how to open them

What is a HFD file?

A .HFD file is a HotDocs Form Document file.

HotDocs Form Document File (.HFD) is a file type created and used by HotDocs, a document automation system by Mitratech formerly known from Matthew Bender, designed for producing digital forms. When you complete a form template (one that uses HotDocs's Envoy-based form format) by filling in answers via an interview or directly, saving it as a .HFD file produces a "form document" - a digital form with its fields populated with specific responses. This document retains the form layout and editable answer fields so you can later reopen it, review or change answers within HotDocs Filler, or reprint with the data embedded.

A .HFD form document is written by HotDocs when assembling a Form Template (.HFT) using user responses (often provided via the interview process) or from an answer source (.ANX). Once created, HotDocs Filler reads the .HFD to display the completed form for viewing, printing, or editing the answers. Although the layout, static text, graphics, and field placements come from the original Envoy-based form template, the computing or branching logic that was in the template is not dynamic in the .HFD document - fields simply show stored answers.

Technically .HFD is an Envoy-based format (the same layout system used in HotDocs Envoy-based Form Templates) rather than PDF-based. It belongs to the set of HotDocs file types called "Envoy-based." .HFD documents appear in the official HotDocs file extensions lists as "HotDocs Envoy-based Form Document."
